Organised by Destination Basingstoke, the A Place to be Proud of Awards highlights the remarkable contributions of individuals, groups, organisations, places, and initiatives that make Basingstoke a diverse and vibrant place to live and do business in. This year, Queen Mary’s College saw two individuals from its community be recognised for their outstanding work. 

Young Role Model Award

The Young Role Model Award was proudly presented to QMC student Aaron Horwick. Alongside his academic commitments, Aaron has made a significant impact on his community through his dedicated work in a care home, particularly in supporting individuals with dementia. His teachers have acknowledged his kindness, patience, and enthusiasm for learning.

Destination Basingstoke expressed, “The judges felt it is Aaron’s profound empathy and his unwavering commitment to serving others that earned him the winner’s trophy. This is perfectly exemplified by his part-time work at a care home for people with different stages of dementia. He worked on Christmas Day, handing out gifts and chatting with residents. Aaron’s selfless actions, both within his academic pursuits and in his community involvement, exemplify the positive impact that young people can have on the world around them. Aaron’s commitment to serving others, his exceptional academic achievements, and his ability to inspire those around him make him a worthy winner of this award. Congratulations Aaron.”

The Young Role Model Award celebrates individuals aged 18 or under who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in a hobby, sport, enterprise, fundraising for charity, or through extraordinary community contributions. Aaron’s story is a testament to the inspiration and positive change young people can bring to their communities.

Inspirational Educator Award

Another highlight of the awards was the Inspirational Educator Award, which recognises those who have inspired others through education and learning. This year, our very own Anne Higgins, a dedicated and passionate Performing Arts teacher at QMC, was a finalist in this category.

Anne’s dedication to her students and her passion for the arts are unparalleled. She engages students in various vocational courses, from Level 3 Performing Arts to playwriting, always treating each individual with professional care and encouraging them to aim high. Many of her students have gone on to successful careers in the performing arts.

• “Anne completely sums up the word Performing Arts for me! Her encouragement and enthusiasm created a positive space where we felt welcomed and supported.” – Chloe Gill

• “Every kid who has the honour of being taught by you is just as lucky as I was. Thank you for steering me the right way.” – Jodie Steele

Anne’s energy, commitment, and professionalism have left an indelible mark on the college community. She is a significant presence at QMC, always inspiring students with her kind and inclusive approach to the arts.

The A Place to be Proud of Awards 2024 has once again showcased the incredible individuals who make Basingstoke a special place. From young role models like Aaron Horwick to inspirational educators like Anne, these awards celebrate the dedication and passion that drive our community forward.
